Mobily buys WiMAX firm

Saudi Arabian cellco Etihad Etisalat (Mobily) has agreed to buy 99.9% of start-up WiMAX network operator Bayanat Al-Ouladata for USD400 million. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Bayanat was licensed as a data service provider in August 2004, and awarded a contract to Samsung in January 2007 for the deployment of a wireless broadband network based on 802.16e mobile WiMAX technology. The network is due to be launched by the end of 2007, with initial coverage in the four main cities of Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Makkah, before being expanded nationwide in 2008.According to Mobily, the purchase of Bayanat is intended to complement its HSDPA mobile broadband internet services.
