Turbo boost: 3’s HSPA upgrade goes live

17 Sep 2007

Swedish equipment provider Ericsson has upgraded Hi3G Access Sweden’s (3) mobile network with HSPA technology to enable theoretical maximum download speeds of 7.2Mbps and uplink speeds of 1.4Mbps. The HSPA network went live in major Swedish cities today, giving 3’s Turbo 3G users faster access to mobile broadband services including internet surfing, video, TV, music and quicker data uploads. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, 3 launched commercial W-CDMA services in Sweden in May 2003, and had expanded 3G coverage to 96% of the population by the beginning of 2007. The cellco, 60% owned by Hong Kong’s Hutchison Whampoa, upgraded the network with a commercial 3.5G HSDPA platform in November 2006, also supplied by Ericsson, under the Turbo 3G brand name, with an initial maximum download speed of 3Mbps.
