BPL Mobile applies for new licences to expand its reach

10 Sep 2007

BPL Mobile has applied to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for licences to operate services in new regions, writes Reuters citing local newspaper reports. BPL currently only operates in India’s financial hub Mumbai, but is now seeking licences for 21 of India’s 23 regions. The company needs ‘a larger footprint to derive scale economies and cost synergies,’ the CEO of the company was quoted as having said.

In a separate, but related story, the DoT turned down a request from MTNL for more GSM-900 spectrum in Mumbai and Delhi on the basis that there is none available. Additional spectrum is only likely to become available once the military has relinquished frequencies. MTNL already has an allocation of frequencies in the 1800MHz band on a trial basis.
