575 PLDT workers to go

10 Sep 2007

575 workers at Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co (PLDT) have been issued termination notices effective 16 September, reports local newspaper Inquirer.net. PLDT also axed around 500 employees in 2002. Inquirer.net quotes Iron Ramirez, Mindanao sector head of the 3,750-strong workers’ group Manggagawa ng Komunikasyon sa Pilipinas (MKP), who protested at ‘another illegal move by PLDT as it clearly violated the provisions of their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)…The retrenchment of 575 workers is the second wave. It must be noted that the layoff in 2002 of more than 500 workers was illegal according to the Supreme Court [which]… ordered the return to work of the retrenched workers, but the PLDT management… has not accepted [the ruling].’ He added that his group would protest the redundancies.
