Softbank Mobile seen winning the cellular war in August

Softbank Mobile’s aggressive marketing campaigns paid off in August as it beat larger rivals NTT DoCoMo and KDDI Corp to the punch in terms of signing up new users, according to data published by Japan’s Telecommunications Carriers Association. Softbank Corp’s mobile unit added a net 188,900 new subscribers in August compared with 158,500 for KDDI (au and TU-KA), while DoCoMo lost a net 22,900 users. It was the fourth straight monthly win for Softbank Mobile, the country’s third largest operator with 16.854 million users as at 31 August 2007. At the same date, NTT DoCoMo had 52.904 million subscribers and KDDI 29.059 million.
