A consortium of Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), Belgium’s Telenet, and 21Net has won a contract to install broadband internet technology on high speed trains operated by Thalys, the companies said in a joint statement. Thalys plans to start offering wireless broadband internet access to all passengers on services between Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Cologne by the end of the year, with trials to start this month. The statement said that NSN will manage the project, supply and operate the core network technology, and provide network maintenance. 21Net will supply a satellite link, while Telenet will provide customer support and commercial internet services such as gaming and video-on-demand.
