700MHz sale set for January

21 Aug 2007

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has revealed that its auction of 700MHz wireless spectrum will begin on 16 January 2008 and will be completed by the end of that month. The 700MHz band, which is seen as being ideal for offering mobile internet services in built-up areas, is currently used by TV broadcasters but will be freed up by 2009 following the switch to digital transmissions. Firms such as Google are expected to enter the bidding, with the sale expected to raise up to USD10 billion.
