Vimpelcom, Russia’s second largest cellular operator, has acquired Tele2’s operations in the Irkutsk region in the far east of the country. Vimpelcom paid USD232 million for Corporation Severnaya Korona (CSK), which has GSM-900/1800 and D-AMPS concessions covering a region which is home to approximately 2.5 million people. CSK had around 570,000 subscribers at the end of June, Vimpelcom says, accounting for 21.5% of the Irkutsk cellular market. Vimpelcom now has operations in 75 of Russia’s 85 regions. Meanwhile, Vimpelcom and Tele2 Russia have signed a ten-year nationwide roaming agreement.
