Sprint Nextel has announced that it is pulling out of its joint venture with major cable operators which won licences in the government’s auction of Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum last year. Sprint says the move will not affect its deal with the cablecos under which the partners jointly market wireless services alongside cable TV, telephony and internet access. The SpectrumCo venture involving Sprint, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications paid USD2.4 billion for 137 licences in the 2006 AWS auction. Sprint was the smallest partner, with a 5% non-voting stake. The cable operators have still to announce what they plan to do with their AWS spectrum.
