Chunghwa and Viettel look at internet venture

6 Aug 2007

Taiwanese incumbent telco Chunghwa Telecom and Vietnamese military-owned mobile and fixed line provider Viettel are reported to be planning a joint venture to offer internet and data services in Vietnam. A report in the Commercial Times says that Chunghwa has been mulling investments in Vietnam for about a year, and would expect to expand the Vietnamese business beyond the data market in the future. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, at the end of March 2007 Viettel accounted for around 24% of Vietnam’s retail DSL subscribers, and is the second largest VoIP provider in the country, behind incumbent VNPT.
