ETB teams up with CANTV

Venezuelan state-owned incumbent CANTV and Colombian municipal telco Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Bogotá (ETB) have signed an agreement to build a 100km fibre-optic link to increase data and voice traffic capacity between the two countries, reports BNamericas. The project, dubbed Interconnection Project Colombia, will also give ETB access to additional international internet bandwidth via carrier of carriers Brasil Telecom GlobeNet’s undersea cables. According to a joint statement by the companies, ETB currently has 240,000 broadband subscribers and if the company plans to achieve the growth in subscribers it has set out – 300,000 by the end of this year and 800,000 by end-2010 – the project is a must. The network is scheduled to be ready towards the middle of 2008.
