China Unicom plans to bid for a 3G mobile licence based on CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology, the China Business News reported, quoting Unicom’s vice president. Li Zhengmao said the company was currently in talks with several potential partners and was evaluating operating requirements. The report added that Hong Kong operators, including fixed line providers City Telecom and Wharf T&T, are also interested in obtaining 3G licences. Hong Kong has four existing 3G licensees based on the W-CDMA standard: Hutchison, CSL, PCCW and SmarTone. In October 2006 China Unicom won a CDMA2000 licence in Macau.
