Publicly-listed mobile operator PT Excelcomindo Pratama (Excelcom) reported gross operating income of IDR3.7 trillion (USD408.1 million) in the first half of 2007, a 28% rise on the same period of 2006, driven by subscriber gains thanks to the introduction of new ‘service programmes’. At the end of June the company had 10.2 million customers, up 22% year-on-year from 8.4 million in June 2006. Pre-tax income in the six-month period was also up 29% from IDR1.2 trillion to IDR1.6 trillion.

Excelcom President Director Hasnul Suhaimi said his company invested more than IDR2.9 trillion in the first six months of the year to improve service quality as well as to expand service networks. ‘During the first semester of 2007 we built more than 1,600 BTS (base transceiver stations), bringing their number close to 9,000 across Indonesia. The BTS are able to serve 85% of the Indonesian population,’ he said.
