23 Jul 2007

State-owned telecoms operator Nepal Telecom (NT) has announced ambitious plans to increase network capacity to six million lines over the next three years, reports The Himalayan Times. Under the scheme, due to be completed by 2010, the telco will effect a near four-fold increase in capacity from the 1.6 million lines currently in service. NT will deploy around 3.5 million GSM mobile lines and a further one million CDMA-based lines under the project, providing coverage to more remote parts of the country. The telco’s GSM networks are currently limited to 42 out of 75 districts, whereas CDMA is available in 70.
