Handy cap gets UK, German cellcos off the hook

19 Jul 2007

The European Commission has dropped lawsuits alleging excessive wholesale international roaming fees against cellcos Telefonica O2 UK, Vodafone UK, Vodafone Germany and T-Mobile Germany, which it first threatened the firms with in 2004. Brussels said the charges represented ‘abuses of dominant market positions’, but since passing a price ceiling on wholesale and retail EU roaming fees into law in June this year, the commission has dropped legal proceedings, saying that the new price cap ‘addresses the same issues as those addressed in these antitrust cases, and clearly resolves them for the future.’
