US cellco Sprint Nextel has selected ZTE of China as a supplier of WiMAX customer premises equipment (CPE). Under the deal ZTE will supply WiMAX PC cards, modems and other devices. Sprint plans to launch WiMAX services in its first two markets – Chicago and Washington DC – towards the end of this year, and plans to be covering 100 million people nationwide by end-2008. Its networks are being deployed by three separate suppliers – Motorola, Samsung and Nokia – with Samsung and Nokia also providing end-user devices. More details of global WiMAX deployments can be found in TeleGeography’s WiMAX Market Tracking Service.
