Czech mobile start-up U:fon, the operating arm of local concern MobilKom, says it will have national coverage of 50% of the Republic by August, rising to 100% by the year end. U:fon is the fourth mobile operator in the Czech market, and in contrast to the three incumbents it is not focusing on voice services, but instead targeting the data and high speed internet market. U:fon is controlled by MobilKom, which is itself a joint venture between Motorola and ConnecTel, and has links to the investment firm Penta. According to Telecompaper, Penta has said it will invest CZK7 billion (USD341.8 million) in the venture. The newcomer is targeting a 10% market share within three to four years, and plans to introduce voice services in 2008.
