Regulator leaves a million wireless users without service

Benin’s Transitional Post and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has suspended the licences of cellcos MTN and Etisalat’s Atlantique Telecom, leaving almost a million customers without service. The regulator claims the pair require new licences because their ownership structure has changed, making them essentially new providers. The regulator has threatened to shut down both networks permanently if they do not agree to sign new contracts, which not coincidentally each carry a USD50 million fee.
