Ancel plans rate cut to coincide with 3G launch

16 Jul 2007

Uruguayan cellco Ancel plans to cut its tariffs in August, coinciding with its launch of 3G services, reports BNamericas, quoting local daily El País. According to Ancel, the rate cut was planned months ago, and has nothing to do with the fact that rival operator CTI Móvil recently cut its rates by 23% in a move to attract new subscribers from Ancel and Movistar. Ancel, a unit of state-run telco Antel, is currently installing 3G base stations and has started importing 3G compatible handsets. According to reports, the company has allotted USD20 million for the 3G rollout, and started testing UMTS technology in 2005.
