Viettel claims top spot in mobile market

Local journal VN Economy reports that military-owned cellco Viettel has become Vietnam’s largest operator, serving ten million subscribers by the end of June 2007 with a network of 4,000 base transmission stations. The corporation carries 30 million voice minutes a day and is now earning revenue of over VND1 trillion (USD62.5 million) a month. It claims to have signed up 45% of all new subscribers in the mobile sector in 2007. Viettel posted revenues of VND7 trillion for the first six months of 2007, equal to what it earned for the whole year of 2006, and representing around 23% of sector’s total revenue.
