US cellular operator Leap Wireless has hired Nortel Networks to expand its Cricket CDMA network. Nortel will supply CDMA2000 1x equipment, with part of the USD135 million three-year deal calling for the deployment of advanced EV-DO Revision A technology. The network expansion comes after Leap Wireless won new licences in last year’s Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum auction. Leap’s Cricket service had more than 2.5 million subscribers at the end of March according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database.
