Dr Tarek Kamel, the Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information Technology, has announced that the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has set the terms and conditions for the award of a second landline licence. According to the minister a bid for the concession will be announced in 2008 and will become operational the following year.
The award of a second landline licence comes as part of the ongoing strategy of liberalising communications. The new entrant will compete with incumbent monopolist Telecom Egypt.
