2Connect throws down gauntlet to Batelco

Bahraini alternative telco 2Connect held a press conference on Tuesday to publicise its planned nationwide launch of a free internet access service aimed at low-income residential users. 2Connect plans to provide a 256kbps broadband package with no subscription fee as part of its ‘civic responsibility’. The company argued that the majority of Bahraini broadband users – approximately 60,000 – pay for a 256kbps entry-level package, and the subscription-free offer would help it build a foundation customer base to mount a serious challenge to the incumbent Batelco, which still dominates the sector.
