Vinaphone to be privatised after MobiFone

27 Jun 2007

The General Director of the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT)has said that the equitisation of subsidiary cellco VinaPhone will only take place after the privatisation of its other cellular subsidiary MobiFone is completed. ‘We can’t perform equitisation of the two mobile phone networks at the same time, when we don’t have any experience,’ he said. The privatisation of VinaPhone and MobiFone was permitted by the government in early 2005. MobiFone is said to have employed a suitable consultant and is looking for a strategic investor. MobiFone’s shares will be listed on the Hanoi bourse in 2008 at the earliest, meaning that shares in Vinaphone are unlikely to be sold until late 2008.
