New op for Nicaragua?

26 Jun 2007

The governments of Nicaragua and Venezuela are working together towards creating a new mobile operator in Nicaragua, reports BNamericas quoting Venezuelan daily El Universal. Jacqueline Farías, president of Venezuelan mobile operator Movilnet, says: ‘We are evaluating a new joint company with Nicaragua so we can compete together with other companies there.’ The Nicaraguan mobile market is a duopoly between América Móvil’s Claro and Telefónica’s Movistar, with Claro claiming around 70% of all subscribers. Movilnet is a wholly owned subsidiary of Venezuelan national telco CANTV, itself majority controlled by the government following its recent re-nationalisation, and is that country’s second largest cellco by subscribers.
