VNPT to trial WiMAX in urban areas

22 Jun 2007

Vietnam Datacommunications Company (VDC), a subsidiary of Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) have signed a deal with US vendor Motorola to commence a technical and commercial WiMAX trial in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the nation’s two largest cities. The year-long trial is expected to begin in October 2007. It is anticipated that WiMAX technology will allow VDC to reach a wider subscriber base, help meet the demand for broadband, and offer IP services such as VoIP without the need for wired infrastructure. VDC is already carrying out WiMAX trials in the mountainous region of Lao Cai with another US vendor, Intel.
