Viettel in talks to buy retailer

22 Jun 2007

Military-backed Vietnamese operator Viettel says that it is negotiating to buy the mobile phone retail network belonging to Nettra after the latter decided to withdraw from the market. If Viettel is successful, Vietnam’s mobile phone distribution market would see its first merger, and would mark the first step in the telco’s plan to become the country’s largest mobile phone retailer. A representative of Nettra said, ‘We are in the negotiation process so we can’t release any specific information.’ Nettra received a licence to retail mobile phones in March last year, and has established 115 shops, including 66 in HCM City, 44 in Hanoi and three in Danang. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Viettel was the top placed cellular network operator at the end of 2006, with 7.3 million customers.
