NCC sanctions MTN for poor service

22 Jun 2007

Cellco MTN Nigeria has been officially sanctioned by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), following several warnings for poor network service. Henceforth, and for the next 90 days, MTN must now submit a weekly report to the NCC, detailing what it is doing to improve service quality. The commission has also banned the operator from launching any new promotions encouraging customers to use more minutes. If MTN fails to comply with the directive, the NCC will impose a fine of NGN5 million (USD39,900) and a further sum of NGN500,000 per day that the fine remains unpaid and for as long as the contravention persists. As reported in CommsUpdate earlier this week, Nigeria’s other cellcos, Glo Mobile, Celtel and M-Tel, are also expected to face sanctions.
