22 Jun 2007

Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa’s international 3G mobile division, 3 Group, has announced plans to launch a range of handsets which will support Qualcomm’s BREW mobile content platform. ‘3 has always been dedicated to offering customers the best possible mobile internet experience, and we believe this launch will allow us to extend this philosophy even further,’ said Frank Meehan, director and general manager, global 3G handset and application group, Hutchison Whampoa. ‘Using BREW, we can embed applications on the handset to deliver a single integrated user experience, which in turn will encourage take-up of our services.’ Offering services under the 3 brand name, Hutchison Whampoa holds UMTS licences in thirteen countries and territories: Hong Kong, Macau, Australia, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Israel, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Italy, the UK and Ireland. Eight of its 3G licensee subsidiaries are part of 3 Group, whilst its Hong Kong, Macau, Israel, Sri Lanka and Indonesia operations come under its Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd (HTIL) unit (source: TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database).
