BNamericas reports that Uruguayan state-run telco Antel’s mobile arm Ancel plans to launch 3G services, based on UMTS/HSPA (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service/High Speed Packet Access) technology, within the next two months. The company is currently installing all the necessary 3G base stations, and compatible handsets are being imported into the country. The rollout will first be offered to southern Uruguay and then expanded to include the entire country. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Ancel was the country’s leading cellco at the end of last year, with 980,000 subscribers, a 45% market share.
