US wireless ISP Horizon Wi-Com says it has begun its first mobile WiMAX trials in a number of cities in northeastern states, including New York, Boston and Washington DC. The first commercial services are expected to be launched at the end of this month. Horizon began deploying 802.16e wireless broadband systems in January this year, using equipment supplied by Navini Networks. It eventually plans to launch commercial services in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Richmond and Cincinnati. ‘We are first. We have completed Phase I and are now trialling subscribers in some of the most exciting cities,’ according to Horizon’s president, Ron Olexa. ‘We will provide high speed internet access to residential and business users in markets containing approximately 70 million POPs,’ he adds.
