Unitel signs USD45 million UMTS deal with Ericsson

Angolan cellco Unitel has signed a deal worth an estimated USD45 million with Swedish vendor Ericsson for the supply and installation of network equipment including 3G UMTS technology. According to a press release, the contract demonstrates Unitel’s determination to guarantee its growth in terms of new technologies and the quality of its services. In August 2006 Angola’s largest mobile operator contracted Ericsson to supply and install GSM equipment and provide a range of back-up services, in a deal worth USD150 million. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Unitel had 2,321,000 subscribers at the end of March 2007.
