Vodacom, South Africa’s largest cellular operator by subscribers, has signed a cross-marketing deal with pay-TV operator MultiChoice. Vodafone will be offering its 23 million subscribers a package of satellite TV services. It is also expanding its range of mobile video services, with a pilot of 17 channels via digital video broadcast to handset (DVB-H) technology being run in partnership with MultiChoice. Vodacom already offers 22 channels of video content via its mobile TV platform. ‘With cellphone penetration in South Africa at more than 80%, Vodacom is constantly looking for opportunities to expand its growth horizontally in the market,’ said Vodacom’s CEO, Alan Knott-Craig.
