UPC expands cable empire

11 Jun 2007

Slovenian cable operator UPC Telemach has consolidated its leading market position with the acquisition of 66.7% of Ljubljanski Kabel from London-based Regent Finance, the Slovenian Press Agency reports. The EUR10 million (USD13.4 million) deal gives UPC 28,000 new cable subscribers to take its total to over 150,000, and 6,000 new cable broadband internet users to give it a total of 40,000. The company claims that it now has over 40% of the country’s cable TV subscribers and 15% of broadband customers. Slovenia’s telecoms regulator, the Agency for Post and Electronic Communications (APEK) welcomed the deal, saying that consolidation of cable operators means more competition to national telco Telekom Slovenije, especially in terms of broadband internet infrastructure.
