Primary schools from across Belize have taken part in the official launch of a free internet programme by national PTO Belize Telecom. According to the company, forty secondary and tertiary institutions as well as six primary schools are already online free of charge. But in a major expansion to the initiative, over the next two years the country’s remaining elementary schools will be given free web access via wireless links. There are approximately 67,000 children in more than two hundred primary schools across the country. Previous plans to provide free internet to all schoolchildren have been aborted because of financial and logistical problems.
