According to Cofetel’s production sector index ITEL, quoted by BNamericas, Mexico’s telecoms sector grew 22.4% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2007, the highest rate for two years and outstripping the average overall economic growth of 2.6%. The regulatory body said the sector had benefited from alliances between operators and a stable macroeconomic environment, which all helped to increase subscriber numbers and traffic. Lower rates were also cited, with local fixed line telephony prices dropping 3.9% compared to a year ago and tariff reductions across the board, including post-paid mobile rates (20.4%), pre-paid tariffs (4%), national long-distance (7.7%), and international long-distance (1%).
