Telsur expands network to Coyhaique

31 May 2007

BNamericas reports that Telefónica del Sur (Telsur) has extended its rural wireless voice and data services to Coyhaique, in remote Southern Chile, citing a statement from UTStarcom, the equipment vendor behind the network. UTStarcom will expand Telsur’s IP-based Personal Access System (iPAS) mobile service using a personal handyphone system (PHS) platform. UTStarcom’s VP for the Southern Cone Martin Rivaben told BNamericas that the PHS technology is especially viable for remote areas because it allows the operator to roll out services over a limited amount of spectrum and still handle a more densely populated area.
