Hutchison Telephone Company (3), Hong Kong’s largest 3G mobile provider by subscribers, has launched full commercial i-mode data services this week, in partnership with the mobile internet service’s Japanese provider NTT DoCoMo. Hutchison’s i-mode services are supported by a mobile internet platform, NEMIP, supplied by Japan’s NEC. NEMIP incorporates gateways, mail server systems and portal systems supporting multi-operator applications. The mail server system facilitates ease of use of i-mode mobile mail services with video, audio and picture file attachments, filtering functions, as well as full interoperability with other e-mail or MMS enabled phones. The multi-operator functions provided by NEMIP allow mobile operators to share a common i-mode platform and application suite with affiliated companies. The multi-operator capability will enable Hutchison’s subsidiary Hutchison Telephone (Macau) to introduce i-mode services in Macau in the near future. NTT DoCoMo and NEC own indirect shareholdings of 24.1% and 5% respectively in Hutchison’s Hong Kong and Macau businesses.
