29 May 2007

French vendor Alcatel-Lucent has announced a contract with Ancel, wireless arm of Uruguayan incumbent telco Antel, to supply and install a 3G wireless network based on UMTS/HSPA (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service/High Speed Packet Access) technology. The project will enable Ancel to expand capacity and offer next generation services, including mobile broadband, mobile TV and video calls. No date was given for completion of the work, which will see Ancel’s network coverage expanded to 70% of Uruguayan territory and 97% of the population. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Ancel was the country’s leading cellco at the end of last year, with 980,000 subscribers, a 45% market share.
