KPN of the Netherlands is close to acquiring the Dutch assets of Italian broadband service provider Tiscali for EUR255 million (USD343 million), having secured the necessary approval from the competition authority NMA. The two operators originally agreed the deal in September 2006; it is expected to close next month. Tiscali has around 276,000 ADSL subscribers and also operates its own network, reselling ADSL services to other ISPs. The NMA notes that the acquisition of the company will lift KPN’s market share by 5% to nearly 50% (KPN disputes this, saying it will be nearer 45%), but is unconcerned, saying that there are enough cable operators and other xDSL providers present to ensure adequate sector competition.
