Iusacell and Unefon to retain separate brands

24 May 2007

Iusacell’s 3G product director Gustavo Guevara has told BNamericas that despite being under joint Grupo Salinas ownership, merged Mexican mobile operators Iusacell and Unefon will maintain separate commercial brands. Although both brands will continue to offer post-paid and pre-paid services, Iusacell will focus more on post-paid and Unefon on pre-paid. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, the two companies between them accounted for a 6% share of the market, ahead of Nextel de Mexico with 2.7% but some way behind rivals Telefónica (15.1%) and the América Móvil-owned Telcel (76.2%).
