Omantel looking at Pakistan investment

23 May 2007

Former monopoly Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) said yesterday that it was considering buying ‘a big share’ in a Pakistani telecom company to expand outside its home market. It did not name a particular firm. Omantel has faced competition in its domestic cellular market since Nawras, a subsidiary of Qatar Telecom, started operations in 2005. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Nawras had grabbed a 34% share of subscribers by the end of March 2007.
