Mobile users now account for more than a quarter of all high speed internet subscriptions in Portugal. Figures released by the regulator Anacom show that 573,000 of the country’s 2.08 million broadband internet connections were via 3G mobile phones at the end of March 2007. In the fixed broadband market, meanwhile, growth in the number of high speed cable modem connections outstripped ADSL growth for the first time; the number of cable lines was up 3.7% to 558,000, while there was a 3.1% rise in ADSL subscriptions to 946,000. In the fixed market dominant provider Portugal Telecom saw its share of total lines fall slightly to 71%; around 49% of new broadband customers opted for alternative providers.
