15 May 2007

Third largest cellco by subscribers Celtel has launched Nigeria’s first GSM payphone system in the city of Onitsha, with a promise that the service will aid the government’s rural telephony development programme. A Celtel officer told local daily newspaper Vanguard, ‘The target for Celtel Pay phone is the entire country, however, special attention will be paid to the rural areas, where many Nigerians live and work…We are helping the government to realise its objective of opening up and connecting the rural communities to the rest of the world.’ The cellco intends to make its new product, known as ‘Jembi Payphone’ available to small operators who currently operate under branded umbrellas and small kiosks, and hopes to create up to 60,000 employment opportunities nationwide.
