Belarus’ national fixed line PTO Beltelcom has announced plans to launch a wireless in the local loop (WiLL) network in May 2007, in partnership with mobile network operator, and 50%-owned subsidiary, BelCel (Diallog). According to Beltelecom general director Konstantin Tikar, the pair have already deployed a test WiLL network with 15 subscribers, and intend to roll out between 3,000 and 5,000 terminals covering 27-32 districts by end-2007 in a bid to improve broadband access in rural areas where it is uneconomical to roll out fixed line networks.
