3G in Brazil: licences this year, launches next year?

3 May 2007

Erasmo Rojas, Latin America and Caribbean director of GSM industry association 3G Americas, has told BNamericas that Brazil’s mobile market could have two million post-paid 3G subscribers by 2009 if the country’s telecoms authorities auction next generation licences soon. ‘I expect trials this year, but a large scale rollout should begin in 2008’, Rojas said, before expressing his belief that the USD100 3G handset range recently announced by LG should be affordable for most of Brazil’s post-paid users. BNamericas states that regulatory body Anatel expects to finalise this month which spectrum band is to be used for 3G services, with an auction for licences being held by the end of the year.
