Maroc Télécom’s new Morocco-France link completed

French infrastructure provider Alcatel-Lucent has completed the rollout of Maroc Télécom’s new submarine cable network linking Asilah in northwest Morocco with Marseille, France. The Atlas Offshore cable was built under a USD34 million turnkey contract awarded to Alcatel-Lucent in July 2006. It is designed to strengthen Maroc Télécom’s regional connectivity, increase international broadband capacity, and raise its ability to develop new high speed services The cable has an initial capacity of 40Gbps (expandable to a maximum 320Gbp), allowing simultaneous transmission of 500,000 voice calls. The Moroccan incumbent has said that the new system will support a rise in call centre traffic, with positive spin-offs for the local economy.
