Big three win 3G

23 Apr 2007

As expected, Russia’s ‘big three’ cellular operators have been awarded 3G concessions. The Federal Communications Agency has offered licences to MTS, Vimpelcom and MegaFon, which between them control 85% of all Russian mobile subscribers. The initial 3G networks are expected to go live in the main cities by the end of this year, with operators first having to work with the military to free up the necessary spectrum.
