Spectrum available in 61 Russian regions

18 Apr 2007

The Russian government is awarding GSM-1800 frequencies covering 61 regions in a series of tenders between April and October this year. 100 lots of spectrum will be sold covering all federal districts except for Moscow, St Petersburg and the Urals. In addition, GSM-900 frequencies will be awarded in four regions, CNews reports. The tenders should finally see Vimpelcom win the nationwide coverage it has been chasing through legal action; the state’s radio frequencies commission had blocked its attempts to gain spectrum in all regions of the Far East Federal District, and Vimpelcom won a legal battle giving it the right to expand nationwide. Other cellcos such as MTS, MegaFon, Tele2, SMARTS and Svyazinvest’s regional cellular subsidiaries are also likely to take part in the tenders.
