Three in the running for wireline licence

The Saudi Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) has qualified three groups in its tender to create a new national wireline operator. The qualified applicants are: the Optical Communication Company Consortium (comprising US firms MCI International and Verizon), the Al-Mutakamilah Consortioum (led by PCCW of Hong Kong), and the Atheeb Consortioum (led by Batelco of Bahrain). The applicants have already submitted bids which will be evaluated on 21 April, Telecompaper reports. The winning bidder will compete against current monopolist Saudi Telecom Company (STC).
